About the Maps

Africans and their descendants have resisted oppression from their initial encounters with Europeans and Arabs to the present moment. This digital humanities project captures their efforts in two distinct maps that systematically compile and analyze a wide range of data.  Map I, “Slave Revolts,” encompasses over four centuries of struggles to end enslavement.  Map II, “Resistance,” begins with early twentieth-century global labor and political movements to the “end” of South African apartheid in 1994.  Zoom in for full participation to access historical accounts, images, videos, and citations.
